Art Inside Out | Ancient Egyptian Coffin of Horus
After nearly a century, this rare Egyptian coffin is out of storage!
When it arrived at the Brooklyn Museum, little was known about the coffin aside from the name of its collector. All other provenance information was lost to time. However, recent research and conservation efforts are bringing both the coffin and its history into the light. This includes the fact that the coffin belonged to Horus, son of Padikhonsu.
Treatment of the coffin included: gentle cleaning, stabilization of insect-damaged wood, recovering loose coating, reactivating original glue used to close the coffin, removing 19th-century hardware, minimizing visual disturbances to the surfaces, and more.
See the coffin during your next visit in our Egyptian art galleries on the third floor.
