Studio Art Program
Registration for fall 2025 is now open!
The Studio Art Program—formerly known as the Gallery/Studio Program—offers fun and challenging art-making classes for ages 6 to 96. Be inspired by professional teaching artists, discuss artworks in our exhibitions and collections, develop skills and techniques, and create your own art using new and traditional materials. Each semester ends with a student exhibition in our Education Gallery!

Schedule for fall 2025:
Saturdays: September 27–December 13 (no class October 11 or November 29)
Sundays: September 28–December 14 (no class October 12 or November 30)
Youth and teens: 10 classes for $335; Members: $300 (join today!)
Adults: 10 classes: $375; Members: $340 (join today!)
Scholarships are available for all youth and teen classes on a first-come, first-served basis. After applying, you’ll be notified by email if you are eligible for discounted registration
Ages 6–7
Painting: Monet Your Way
Saturdays, 10:30 am–12:30 pm
How many kinds of marks can you make with a paintbrush? How many colors can you create by mixing paint? Learn the foundations of painting as you explore brushwork and color theory. Visit our exhibition Monet and Venice and see how artists break the rules to develop their own style. Play and experiment with art supplies, and learn to make artworks that are uniquely yours.
Sculpture: Trash to Treasure
Sundays, 10:30 am–12:30 pm
Make art in three dimensions and play with fun materials like cardboard, bottle caps, and everyday odds and ends. Get inspired by artist Oliver Jeffers, who uses found objects, stories, and his imagination to explore big ideas. Learn to glue and build as you turn trash into treasure. Level up your skills and design artwork that shows off your creativity, curiosity, and care for the planet.
Ages 8–10
Sculpture: Shape the Story
Saturdays, 10:30 am–12:30 pm
Turn your ideas into 3D stories using paper, tape, and your imagination! Discover how artist Oliver Jeffers mixes pictures, words, and objects to create playful tales full of wonder. Use line, texture, and form to build sculptures that tell your own fantastical stories. Learn papier-mâché, collage, and layering techniques, and then paint and decorate with color and pattern to bring your scenes to life.
Painting: Big Impressions
Sundays, 10:30 am–12:30 pm
Grow your painting skills as you explore the entire Museum! See how artists such as Claude Monet use color and light to capture fleeting moments in nature, and how painters choose symbols to include in their compositions. Grab a brush and learn to create expressive strokes as you study Impressionist art. Put it all together and end the class with a painting that shows off your new skills and creativity.
Ages 11–13
Sculpture: Build a Ruckus
Saturdays, 1:30–3:30 pm
Build 3D art using papier-mâché and bring big ideas to life with layers of paper, paste, and paint! Visit Red Grooms, Mimi Gross, and The Ruckus Construction Co.: Excerpts from “Ruckus Manhattan” and see how artists constructed a version of New York City filled with color, characters, and imagination. Learn how to build armatures, sculpt forms, and paint your creations with bold detail. Then design your own over-the-top scene that captures the energy, chaos, and charm of city life.
Painting: Portfolio Development
Sundays, 1:30–3:30 pm
Gain all the skills necessary for a strong art high school application—or simply learn for the love of art! This class will cover fundamentals for budding young artists, whatever your goals may be. Master techniques such as color theory and brushwork, and design original compositions. Find inspiration in our galleries and give your pieces a special Brooklyn Museum touch to set your portfolio apart from the rest.
Ages 14–18
Painting: The Power of Paint
Saturdays, 1:30–3:30 pm
Unleash your voice through paint! Visit the exhibition Everyday Rebellions and see how contemporary artists use everyday materials and small gestures to make bold statements about identity, resistance, and change. Learn how to mix colors, layer textures, and use composition to express your point of view. Experiment with techniques like brushwork, collage, and expressive mark-making. By the end of the class, you’ll have created a finished painting that reflects your ideas, story, and unique take on the world.
Adults
Painting: Impressions of Nature
Saturdays, 10:30 am–12:30 pm or 1:30–3:30 pm
Learn to paint stunning landscapes inspired by the shimmering canals of Venice. Study how Claude Monet captured light, color, and reflection as you explore our exhibition Monet and Venice. Practice mixing vibrant colors and creating brushstrokes that show movement and atmosphere. Visit the beautiful Brooklyn Botanic Garden to observe nature’s colors and textures up close. Inspired by the water, architecture, and gardens, create a landscape painting that expresses your vision.
Printmaking: Hidden and Revealed
Sundays, 1:30–3:30 pm
Learn how to carve, ink, and print your own designs while exploring themes of visibility, memory, and transformation. Visit our Visible Storage and Study Center and discover how and why artworks usually kept behind the scenes are brought into public view. In the studio, experiment with linocut techniques to reveal layered images and unexpected details. Play with texture, contrast, and repetition as you create prints that explore what we choose to hide and show, and the stories that emerge in between.
Photography: From Mali to Brooklyn
Sundays, 1:30–3:30 pm
Find out what that button on your camera does and how to tweak its settings to capture the exact image you want. Explore Seydou Keïta: A Tactile Lens to see how this legendary Malian photographer recorded the vibrant spirit, bold style, and rich stories of Bamako’s people, reminding us that every neighborhood (including yours!) has a distinct presence. Learn the classic rules of portrait photography—and then break them as you create striking images that relay powerful narratives from your community.
