Studio Art Program

The Studio Art Program—formerly known as the Gallery/Studio Program—offers fun and challenging art-making classes for ages 6 to 96. Be inspired by professional teaching artists, discuss artworks in our exhibitions and collections, develop skills and techniques, and create your own art using new and traditional materials. Each semester ends with a student exhibition in our Education Gallery!

Scholarships are available for all classes on a first-come, first-served basis. After applying, you’ll be notified by email if you are eligible for discounted registration.

Schedule for fall 2024:

  • Saturdays: September 28–December 14 (no class October 5 or November 30)

  • Sundays: September 29–December 15 (no class October 6 or December 1)

Youth and teens: 10 classes for $310; Members: $279 (join today!)

Adults: 10 classes for $350; Members: $315 (join today!)

Ages 6–7

  • Painting: Brooklyn’s Finest

    Sundays, 10:30 am–12:30 pm

    Grow your painting skills and make art worth showing off to the world! Learn to use brushes, mix colors, and most importantly, create pieces that represent your love for NYC’s best borough. With watercolors and acrylics, paint works that illustrate your favorite neighborhood people and places. Plus, see how other Brooklyn artists use their imagination to express themselves.

  • Sculpture: All That Glitters Is Gold

    Saturdays, 10:30 am–12:30 pm

    “Sparkle” and “shine” are the themes of this class inspired by our exhibition Solid Gold. Consider how artists from around the world use precious metals for everything from jewelry to statues. Learn to use wood, cardboard, wire, and clay to build 3D artworks—and then decorate them with glitter, paint, sequins, and lots of gold.

Ages 8–10

  • Painting: Portraits with Pizzazz

    Saturdays, 10:30 am–12:30 pm

    Dive into a world of make-believe and fantasy while learning about ancient stories from around the globe. Visit our Egyptian Art, Arts of Asia, and Arts of the Americas galleries, and see how people throughout time have used myths and legends to shape their cultural identities. Learn narrative and stop-motion techniques to create videos on an iPad, and build creatures out of clay to craft your own origin story.

  • Animation: Myths and Legends

    Sundays, 10:30 am–12:30 pm

    Dive into a world of make-believe and fantasy while learning about ancient stories from around the globe.   • Drawing: Portfolio Development

    Sundays, 1:30–3:30 pm

    Gain all the skills necessary for a strong art high school application—or simply learn for the love of art! This class will cover fundamentals for budding young artists, whatever your goals may be. Master techniques in observational drawing, and then unleash your creativity by creating original work. Be inspired by local artists in The Brooklyn Artists Exhibition, many of whom also studied in NYC art high schools and colleges, and make your own pieces to display at the Brooklyn Museum.

  • Sculpture: Blinged Out

    Saturdays, 1:30–3:30 pm

    Learn to build in three dimensions with metal, clay, and plaster. Visit our exhibition Solid Gold and see how artists have utilized precious metals to convey beauty, creativity, glamour, and wealth. With embellishment techniques, use gold leaf, tinsel, and sequins to add glitz and sparkle to your own sculptures exploring these themes.

Teens

  • Drawing and Painting: Art and Revolution

    Saturdays, 1:30–3:30 pm

    Fine tune your skills with pencils and brushes in this class dedicated to art’s ability to change the world. Witness the influential works of Elizabeth Catlett and see how artists lend their skills to social movements. Use color theory, composition, and brushstrokes to find your artistic voice, then create art that demonstrates your vision for a better world.

Adults

  • Painting: America Redux

    Saturdays, 10:30 am–12:30 pm

    Saturdays, 1:30–3:30 pm

    Trace the evolution of American painting from colonial portraiture to contemporary icons. See works in our refreshed American Art galleries and explore stories told by Black and Indigenous artists about cultural identity. Each week offers an opportunity to try out a new technique or material, discuss an artwork with your peers, and develop your own creative expression. The class will culminate in a final project: your reflection on identity, belonging, or other ideas inspired by the Museum’s collection.

  • Printmaking: Print Power

    Sundays, 1:30–3:30 pm

    Learn the basics of linocut through drawing, carving, and printing. Visit our exhibition Elizabeth Catlett: A Black Revolutionary Artist and All That It Implies and see how mass-produced art has the power to influence social movements. Experiment with inking, etching, and pressing, and develop your unique style. End the semester by making copies of your art to distribute your creative expression far and wide.

  • Photography: A Portrait of Brooklyn

    Sundays, 1:30–3:30 pm

    Snap, crop, and print as you learn to operate a DSLR camera. Let the Museum be your muse as you photograph architecture, landscapes, and environments. Then, explore portrait photography techniques in our studios. Visit The Brooklyn Artists Exhibition and see what inspires other Brooklyn-based artists. End the semester with a portfolio of works that depict the people and places close to your heart.
