Studio Art Program

The Studio Art Program—formerly known as the Gallery/Studio Program—offers fun and challenging art-making classes for ages 6 to 96. Be inspired by professional teaching artists, discuss artworks in our exhibitions and collections, develop skills and techniques, and create your own art using new and traditional materials. Each semester ends with a student exhibition in our Education Gallery!

Schedule for spring 2025:
Saturdays: March 1–May 10 (no class April 19)
Sundays: March 2–May 11 (no class April 20)
Youth and teens: 10 classes for $310; Members: $279 (join today!)
Adults: 10 classes: $350; Members: $315 (join today!)
Scholarships are available for all youth and teen classes on a first-come, first-served basis. After applying, you’ll be notified by email if you are eligible for discounted registration.
Ages 6–7
Painting: Paint like an Artist
Sundays, 10:30 am–12:30 pm
Grow your painting skills as you explore the entire Museum! See how artists such as Alma Thomas use color theory to make vibrant artworks and how painters choose symbols to include in their compositions. Grab a brush and learn to create expressive strokes as you study abstract art. Put it all together and end the class with a painting that shows off your new skills and your creativity.
Sculpture: Build like an Artist
Saturdays, 10:30 am–12:30 pm
Practice making art in 3D and explore fun sculpture materials such as clay, cardboard, and even toys! See how artists including KAWS use everyday objects to make art that explores childhood and nostalgia. Learn to glue, carve, and assemble items to create your own imaginative artworks. Level up your skills and make art that shows off your imagination and curiosity.
Ages 8–10
Painting: Imagination Nation
Saturdays, 10:30 am–12:30 pm
How do artists use their imagination to tell the story of a country? Visit our American Art galleries and see how artists such as Oscar yi Hou represent their communities and cultures. Study the elements of art and learn to use color, shape, and line to paint dynamic works. Discuss with your class your ideas for making the country a better place and create art that brings your vision to life.
Mixed Media: Give Them Flowers
Sundays, 10:30 am–12:30 pm
How do you show people admiration and respect? Uncover the symbolism behind flowers and see how artist Laura Wheeler Waring uses floral motifs to express appreciation. Combine drawing, photography, and collage as you learn about layering, repetition, and texture. Use your new skills to create whimsical artworks that express gratitude to those who lift you up.
Ages 11–13
Animation: Shine Bright
Sundays, 1:30–3:30 pm
Create animations that sparkle and shine using stop-motion software! Be inspired by the dazzling jewelry, fashion, and artworks in our exhibition Solid Gold. See how artists explore the many meanings and uses of gold, and then tell your own creative stories that examine the role of gold in our world. Use sequins, gems, and metallic paper to bring characters to life.
Painting: Portfolio Development
Saturdays, 1:30–3:30 pm
Gain all the skills necessary for a strong art high school application—or simply learn for the love of art! This class will cover fundamentals for budding young artists, whatever your goals may be. Master techniques such as color theory and brushwork, and design original compositions. Find inspiration in our galleries and give your pieces a special Brooklyn Museum touch to set your portfolio apart from the rest.
Teens
Drawing: Dazzling Figures
Saturdays, 1:30–3:30 pm
Learn to draw the human figure and immerse yourself in a world of glitz and glamor. Study anatomy and gesture as you draw from live models, and then learn about color, texture, and pattern to add a stylish touch to your art. Be inspired by the shimmering fashion in Solid Gold and design your own costumes that express your bold ideas.
Adults
Painting: Radiant Canvas
Learn the fundamentals of painting as you take in our exhibition Solid Gold. See how artists across time have used gold to evoke themes of royalty, holiness, and wealth, as well as to explore complex ideas such as justice and capitalism. Capture luminescence and grow your skills by studying light, washes, and gilding techniques.
Photography: Capture Your World
Sundays, 1:30–3:30 pm
Find out what that button on your camera does and how to change your settings to get the effect you want. Plus, visit Consuelo Kanaga: Catch the Spirit and see how the artist used her camera to confront urgent social issues of her time. Learn the rules of photography—and then learn to break them as you experiment with new ways to capture your community, including using the camera as a tool for social justice.
Printmaking: The Gift of Art
Sundays, 1:30–3:30 pm
Give yourself the gift of art by learning printmaking with a community of art lovers. Gain new skills with linocut, learn all about inking and carving, and create unique works that express your passion. Visit our exhibition Breaking the Mold: Brooklyn Museum at 200 and see new gifts to the Museum. Discuss the role of giving in museums and society at large, and then create prints to give away to friends and family.
